Re: Pass the Butler cast and in rehearsal
Dt: 18 September 2007

In the Green Room, a small high-ceilinged room at the rear of Wyong Memorial
Hall, frantic preparations have been underway for the November production of
Pass the Butler an hilarious English farce written by that irreverent member of
Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Eric Idle.
“What this has meant, of course,” says director Peter Deane “we have been
laughing uncontrollably at all the smart lines in the script. It’s great to
rehearse a comedy with so many clever lines – at times it’s an absolute
cack-up!”
Wyong Drama Group has been fortunate to assemble such a fine cast for the
play. The cast members are Brendon Flynn, Renee Campbell, Damien van der Meulen,
Brenda Baker, Duncan Mitchell, Joan Dalgleish, John Czerniecki, Laszlo Weidlich
and Barry Sampson. Regular WDG audiences will recognise most of the names above.
Peter says that the strange thing about rehearsing the play is that the cast
are starting to get used to all of the jokes. “They do their lines forgetting
exactly how funny the play is. But when a visitor drops in to see a rehearsal
for the first time we understand just how much laughter there will be when we’re
out there in front of our audiences.”
The play is set to open at Wyong Memorial Hall on 8 November for a strictly
limited two-week run. Both Monty Python fans, and general fans of English comedy
will be kicking themselves if they miss it as this play is not often performed
in Australia. Special negotiations with Eric Idle’s agent in London have been
necessary to secure the performance rights.
