Home Fires Burning by Peter Kocan

Home Fires Burning was Bonnie Bryant's directorial entry into the Zenith TheatreFest 1993 play competition.  In 1993 it was exclusively for Australian written one-act plays and it attracted twenty-four entries!  WDG were in the very last (seventh) session (first play) at 2pm on Sunday 29 August 1993.  The awards were given out that afternoon (5:30 pm) but despite being highly commended in a few categories, we did not take home an award in this highly competitive function.

Bonnie directed this play a number of times, in April 1983, July 1990, and August 2004 as well as this production.  The 2004 Wyong TheatreFest page has a micro-video of the entire play available (45 minutes).

Time: 1928.  Place: The inner-Sydney working-class suburb of Pyrmont.
The action takes place in the shabby but homely kitchen of the Harris family about 6:30 in the evening.
The play is about an Australian family who are visited by some outsiders allegedly involved in what would today be termed terrorist activities in the bush "out the back of Wisemans Ferry".

Online here is the complete TheatreFest 1993 programme.
