Kid Stakes by Ray Lawler

This play is the first in the "Doll Trilogy" of Kid Stakes, Other Times and Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, all of whom your current scribe (Peter Deane) has directed, uncannily, over a period of seventeen years.  This play was initially chosen because it was on the NSW H.S.C. reading list, and therefore we thought it would bring in a new audience of high school students.  A handful ended up attending, but it was not a substantial number.  In fact, we also promoted this to local nursing homes and a couple brought along bus-loads, so we actually managed to attract an audience from the opposite end of the scale we were attempting to woo!

The play is set in the 1930s, and in it, the main characters of The Doll, Roo, Barney, Olive, Emma and (then) Nancy - who is missing in The Doll - first meet, and the annual pilgrimage of the canecutters to Melbourne in summer has its foundations lain.  It is basically a love-story of Roo and Olive, the couple who we know tragically break up seventeen years later.  Contrary to most pre-quels, Ray Lawler wrote The Doll in 1953, and the first two plays in 1973-1974, nearly twenty years AFTER the concluding chapter.
